01 · Neck and back of the head · lesson 5

Scalp kneading: from the hairline to the back of the head

You place four fingers at the base of your forehead and move in circles across the whole scalp: to the crown, behind the ears, to the back of the head and down to the base of the neck. The goal isn’t to rub the skin but to shift it relative to the skull.

Reps
8–10 circles at each point; a full pass over the head takes 2–3 minutes.
How often
Daily, at least one full pass. If you sit at work and look at a screen all day — two: in the morning and at the end of the workday.
How to do it right

Your fingers anchor on the skin and move it with them; the hair shouldn’t get pulled. The circles are slow, with noticeable but comfortable pressure. Work systematically: forehead — crown — temples — behind the ears — back of the head — base of the neck, without skipping any area.

Common mistakes

Sliding your fingers through your hair instead of shifting the skin is the most common and the most useless version of this exercise. Another mistake is working only where it feels nice and leaving the back of the head alone; it’s precisely the occipital belly that is most often shortened.

Why it works

The top of the skull is covered by the galea aponeurotica — a dense tendinous cap into which the frontal belly of the occipitofrontalis is woven at the front and the occipital belly at the back. Beneath it lies the loose subaponeurotic tissue, the gliding layer. With chronic tension and little movement this layer becomes fibrotic, the range of glide drops, and microcirculation drops along with it. Kneading restores mobility and increases the distance between skin and bone — exactly what the video talks about.

Why this one

The scalp is the upper anchor of the whole face. When it’s stuck to the bone, the forehead and brows literally hang from a shortened aponeurosis. Release the scalp — and your brows will lift on their own, without a single forehead exercise. This is structural work, not cosmetic.

Why it is easy

It’s done right through your hair, so you need neither oils nor a clean face. It’s perfect while watching a show or in the shower with shampoo. The only test of doing it right: the skin should move under your fingers.

What you will see

This is the exercise after which people say “it feels like my eyes have opened up”. A mobile scalp is the foundation for everything else; invest in it, and your face will start responding faster.
